Top Programs in Energy 2020

This article is part of the “2020 Ranking of MBA Development Programs”. At the time of this writing, our Development Program Directory has 535 programs, with this article focusing on the top ten!

The top three spots in the Energy industry in this year’s rankings are Siemens CEO* Program, Shell Graduate Program, and Chevron Business & Commercial MBA Program, taking first, second and third place respectively. This isn’t too surprising based on their performance in previous years, as well as with how well Siemens CEO* Program has performed overall this year.

What is more surprising seems to be the overall increase in popularity of petroleum companies. While they have always had a decently strong presence in our top Energy industry rankings, all the top programs offered by Shell and Chevron (five in total) have moved up several spots compared to last year's rankings. At first glance this can look quite surprising, given current global attitudes towards the oil industry and climate change. However, many large petroleum companies such as Shell and Chevron have started heavily investing in alternative energies for some years now, but I think this is only half the story.

The technology industry has been increasing at an exponential rate in recent history, and shows no signs of slowing down. It has become a part of our everyday lives and most of us depend on it on a daily basis. With this increase in technology, however, has come an increase in dependency on plastics, which, like petroleum, mostly come from oil. While there has been some ongoing research into alternatives to these polymers, they are far from reaching a point of replacing them, especially on the scale required to satiate their demand. Moreover, a large portion of this research and development is being done, or funded, by many companies in the industry already, meaning that if there were to be a shift in the materials we use in our everyday lives or how we produce them, there would be little to no impact on the market share for the companies already in that industry, thereby providing them a solid footing in the industry, and potentially increasing their attractiveness to prospective candidates.

On top of all of this, with booming populations worldwide, demand for energy is at an all time high, with no signs of decreasing anytime in the foreseeable future. And with relatively large barriers to entry into the industry, companies who have been able to establish themselves already will most likely continue to grow alongside the market, making them very attractive for those seeking to break into the industry.
