Throughout our history we have built upon our distinctive characteristics and enhanced our strengths. Our origins in 1909, as one of the UK’s foremost technical institutes, which focused on meeting society’s needs, set in train an ethos that is still evident at Loughborough today.

In the 21st Century we are one of the country’s leading universities, with an international reputation for research that matters, excellence in teaching and strong links with industry.

We have established wide-ranging academic strengths and are particularly acknowledged in engineering, with the largest concentration of students of any UK university. We are also recognised as the country’s premier university for sport, with an outstanding record of achievement in performance at every level and in sport’s underpinning academic disciplines of exercise and health sciences.

We have developed a reputation for the relevance of our work, producing research that matters, driven by society’s need to address real-life issues. We have well-established partnerships with business and industry and commercial potential is at the centre of much of what we do.
